Dr. Patel’s 8 Ways to Beat Winter

The winter months can feel endless and it’s easy to feel groggy getting back into the old routine. We asked Dr. Ash Patel for some simple ways to jazz up your blues.

1. Plan something to look forward to:

The winter months can seem interminable. Plan your next holiday, next party, or an experience, to brighten your horizon. Simply having something to look forward to can really help us see past the daily grind.

2. Create an action plan:

Be it at work or at home having a goal in sight can energise us to make progress.

3. Stay hydrated:

Nothing drains energy like dehydration. Keep your fluids up and you will be more alert.

4. Beat the stress:

Stress kills energy, enthusiasm, and health. Find a way to relax by identifying a calming activity that you enjoy and dedicating ten or twenty minutes in the day to doing it.

5. Talking therapies

If our brains are overloaded with content, energy is used processing it throughout the day. Talking to a counsellor or a friend can help you to cope with your stress points more easily and you will end up more energised.

6. Get enough sleep!

We all know this one, but it bears repeating. Nothing makes you more energised throughout the day than getting good quality sleep. Make sure your room is dark, purge it of electrical devices, and give sleep the priority status it deserves.

7. Vitamin D deficiency

The body produces Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight so at this time of year it’s a good idea to boost the body’s natural processes with your diet. Vitamin D can be found in:

Fortified breakfast cereals,

Dairy and eggs

Salmon, herring, sardines

8. Omega 3

Low levels of Omega 3 are linked to low moods, whereas higher levels help treat some types of depression. Omega 3 can be found in:

Mackerel and Salmon

Walnuts, flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, soya

Spinach and Kale
