Sore throat (pharyngitis)
What Is It?
If your throat is causing you pain then you may be suffering from what is known as pharyngitis. This indicates an inflammation of the throat or pharynx.
Sore throats can be a symptom of a viral or a bacterial infection. If you are suffering from a sore throat, you may also have:
- Swollen Tonsils
- Tender or swollen neck glands
- Mild pain when swallowing
If your sore throat is caused by a virus, home remedies can ease symptoms while it resolves on its own.
If your sore throat is the symptom of a bacterial infection, you may also have a high temperature (38C to 40C or more), a headache, a cough or runny nose, muscle aches and feel tired or run down. A sore throat caused by bacteria — the strep throat or streptococcal infection — will require antibiotics.
We would recommend seeing a doctor if:
- Your temperature remains high despite taking simple medication like paracetamol
- Your symptoms have failed to improve within seven days
