Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that can cause psychotic symptoms in sufferers. Psychosis is when someone can't distinguish their imagination from reality and symptoms of schizophrenia can often appear in the form of delusions, such as delusions of grandeur or paranoia, and hallucinations like hearing voices. Other schizophrenia symptoms can include behavioural problems, poor thought clarity, apathy and lack of emotion. The causes of schizophrenia remain unclear but it can be a very distressing illness for the patient, as well as their friends and family. There are several treatments available, however, and it is possible for this condition to be managed within a supportive environment.
