1. Understand the winter blues If you tend to get gloomier in winter, you can probably blame Seasonal Affective Disorder. Sometimes called ‘winter’s depression’, it can make mental health symptoms worse.

Here’s why: lower light levels can disrupt your body’s internal clock (called the circadian rhythm). Your body also produces less serotonin, a hormone that affects your appetite, mood and sleep. It might also make more melatonin, the sleep hormone. So if you’re feeling down, it’s not all in your head!

2. Get active

With Christmas and a new year around the corner, now is a great time to work on your fitness goals. You could join a gym, hire a personal trainer, or simply get in the habit of moving more. The upside? You’ll be physically and mentally fitter to shake off the winter blues.

3. Connect with others

It’s tempting to hibernate. But keeping in touch with the special people in your life can help brighten up even the darkest days. Too cold to go out? Pick up the phone for a catch up instead.

4. Try a light box
Light boxes emit 10,000 lux of white light (not UV) – the amount you’d get outside on a clear day. NHS Direct says they work in two-thirds of SAD cases. So it could be a worthwhile investment in your mental health.
