About Chatbot
Babylon’s Chatbot is a software application that can carry out a conversation with you about symptoms and medical issues. Taking into account your self-reported age and gender, it provides relevant information based on how closely conditions match your answers to questions about symptoms and risk factors. You can also ask the Chatbot about symptoms someone else is experiencing by sharing their age and gender.
The information provided by the Babylon chatbot is intended for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be used as medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment recommendations, or a substitute for a medical professional.
You should never take or stop taking any action (such as taking medication) based on information provided by the Chatbot.
The Chatbot will provide different types of information to you based on, among other things, the symptoms entered. One possible output of the symptom checker is the next steps someone experiencing the symptoms entered would usually take. Where the information returned suggests the need for further medical advice, or if you have further questions or concerns, you should always consult with a medical provider. The other possible output is general medical information on the types of conditions that people who have experienced similar symptoms have had, listed in the order (highest to lowest) of how closely the conditions match the symptoms entered, based on symptom prevalence for conditions which are taken from publicly available medical resources.
Information provided about possible medical conditions at the conclusion of the Chatbot conversation is based on a scoring system that ranks conditions from a range of zero (almost impossible match) to 100% (very likely match). The Chatbot will generally provide information about the closest three or four matches based on its mathematical calculations. You can then use the Babylon app to explore more in-depth information about the conditions or speak to a medical provider if you have any questions or concerns. The order in which conditions are listed does not in any way indicate the likelihood of you having or not having a condition.
Babylon’s software is built on various Artificial Intelligence (AI) disciplines including natural language processing, machine learning, and a probabilistic graphical model. The Chatbot relies on various inputs to try to provide information about possible medical conditions. These include personal data from you (the user), expert physician guidance, public health databases, medical research, epidemiology literature, and other verified sources. By way of example, information about conditions is sourced from databases such as PubMed/Medline, which aggregates more than 29 million medical articles from journals, articles and books. The probabilistic graphical model, which guides the interaction between the Chatbot and the user, relies on the combination of both data and expert clinical opinions to influence information provided about possible medical conditions. A full list of references is available below.
Please note that the Chatbot is still learning. At this time, it cannot provide information related to pregnancy or infants.
Chatbot is only intended for individuals aged 18 and over.
About Healthcheck
Healthcheck enables you to understand how your health and wellness may be affected by lifestyle choices, empowering you to achieve your health and wellness goals. It uses extensive epidemiological research to quantify general disease risk factors, and compares these population risk factors to the information entered. The information provided is for informational purposes and consideration of lifestyle changes only.
Healthcheck is not intended to be used or relied on as medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment recommendations, or serve as a substitute for a medical professional.
Healthcheck’s questionnaires – which can be completed separately or all at once – include questions about your body, your activity, your nutrition, and your mood. Based on your answers to these questions, Healthcheck builds your condition risk profile, accounting for how each risk component in the questionnaires (e.g., alcohol intake, smoking) could increase or decrease certain disease risks based on the presence of various relevant factors (e.g., family history, lifestyle factors). The comparative risk levels provided are estimated based on your self-reported risk factors as compared to the population. However, your results are not personalized, because there are other factors that may contribute to individual risk. If someone else enters the same answers as you, they will receive the same information, which does not account for unknown factors.
The comparative risk level information Healthcheck provides is a comparison of your statistical risk profile to the average statistical risk for individuals of the same age and gender. The average statistical risk provided is the chance that a given disease might, in purely statistical terms, develop over the next 5 years in a given population. For example, a risk of “3 in 1000” means that if 1000 people provided identical responses to questions related to a heart condition, 3 of them are statistically likely to develop that condition over the next 5 years. A comparative risk that is higher than average does not necessarily suggest a “high” risk, but rather that the information provided suggests a higher statistical risk than other people of the same age and gender. For example, while family history of a disease and increased age are each likely to result in an increased absolute risk level, the increased age alone will not result in a higher comparative risk level. Please note that certain comparative risk level estimates may be more accurate than others. Circumstances which may result in a less accurate comparative risk level may include, but are not limited to: the presence of long-term medical conditions or disabilities; risk factors of which you are unaware or not asked about; the provision of inaccurate information; a large combination of active risk factors; low disease occurrence; and variable lifestyle and risk factors over time.
Information about each comparative disease risk is paired with information about healthy lifestyle changes and commonly known ways to help reduce the risk (e.g., reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking). The information provided is intended to promote general health and well-being. However, you should only make changes to your lifestyle after having discussed such changes with a medical professional. And you should always discuss any questions or concerns about your health with your doctor.
Information about conditions, symptoms, and epidemiology have been compiled from medical resources such as the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Clinical Knowledge Summaries database, NHS Choices, and by Babylon’s clinicians. A full list of references is available below.
Healthcheck is only suitable for use by adults 18 years of age and over who are not pregnant.
